Oil to Popcorn Ratio

How much popcorn kernels and oil will you need? This will depend on the occasion; will you be popping for family and friends or just a quiet night for one? For comparison, a full-size bag of microwave popcorn pops about 10 cups of popped popcorn.
Use this measurement guide to help you determine the amount of popcorn kernels you will need.
• 1/2 cup of unpopped kernels makes about 14 cups popped popcorn.
• For every 1/2 cup of kernels, use 2 tablespoons of oil. Make sure your pot is big enough to not crowd your popcorn kernels.

What You’ll Need

• JOLLY TIME Pop Corn kernels. Only the best gives you the best pop!
• Use your preferred oil. Coconut oil or peanut oil works best for the JOLLY TIME popping pros.
• A pot that distributes heat evenly, reducing the risk of burning.
• A lid is essential to keep the kernels from flying out but should be slightly vented to allow steam to escape. Too much steam can cause your popcorn to taste stale or chewy.
• Customize your popcorn with your favorite flavors and seasonings.

Let’s get popping!

1. Start with all your ingredients and tools nearby. This will ensure you can move quickly through each step without delay, reducing the risk of burning.
2. Place your pot on the stove over medium heat. Add 2-3 tablespoons of oil (depending on the size of your pot and amount you want to make) and allow it to heat for about 2-3 minutes. To test if the oil is ready, drop in 2-3 popcorn kernels. When they pop, it’s time to move on to the next step.
3. Remove the 2-3 “test” kernels and add the rest of your popcorn. Swirl the pot gently to coat the kernels in oil.
4. Place the lid on the pot but leave a small gap to let steam escape, too much moisture gets you soggy popcorn. Shake the pot every 10-15 seconds to distribute heat and keep the kernels from burning. Make sure to close the gap in your lid while giving it a shake, then allow the steam to vent again.
5. Listen for the musical sounds of popcorn popping. Popping will start to increase. Keep shaking the pot to ensure even heat distribution. When the popping slows to 1-2 pops per second, it’s time to remove the pot from the heat.
6. Turn off the stove and remove the pot from the burner. Keep the lid slightly open to allow excess steam to escape.
7. Pour the popcorn into a large bowl. While it’s still warm add salt or your favorite seasonings. Toss it well to ensure even coating.

Tips from the Popcorn Pros!

• Don’t Overload the Pot: Adding too many kernels at once can cause uneven cooking and increase the risk of burning. Make smaller batches for a smaller pot and vice versa.
• Don’t Overheat the Oil: If the oil is too hot, it’ll burn the kernels before they pop. Stick to medium heat.
• Keep It Moving: Shaking the pot ensures the kernels heat evenly and keeps them from burning.
• Don’t Walk Away: Popping popcorn happens quickly, so stay nearby and listen for the popping to slow.
